Keep Your Eyes On The Prize

A farmer wanted to give his land to one of his three sons. He offered each of them the same chance to win it. After a heavy snowfall, he took the boys outside and pointed to a tree about a 100 yards away. He said to them, "Whoever can walk to that tree in a straight line will get the farm."

The oldest pushed his brothers aside and boasted how he would let them work for him on his farm. Then he began carefully placing one foot in front of the other. He kept his eyes "glued" to the ground so he could watch each foot go perfectly in front of the other. When his father told him he had gone far enough, he grinned from ear-to-ear. When he looked up, he was dismayed to see that he had practically made a complete circle, almost to the spot where he had started!

Next the second oldest began his quest. To avoid making the same mistake his older brother made, he kept a careful watch over his shoulder. He wanted to be sure he didn't look foolish too. He was determined to travel in the straightest of lines. He could hardly contain himself when the voice of his father cried out that he was finished. He was about to turn and hug the tree when he looked to his left and saw it more than 25 yards away!

The father looked at his youngest and asked if he was sure he wanted to do this. The youngster replied that when he got to the tree he would share the farm with his brothers equally. Unlike the other two, he set his gaze firmly on the tree and began walking towards it. Even when he felt himself stumble, his focus remained solidly on that tree. He grew excited as he got closer and closer to his goal. Finally, he was able to touch the tee but didn't until he turned around to see where he had been, Never had a more perfect line been walked.

That's how you need to approach your business. Focus on your destination rather than on every step of the way. Don't dwell on what happened in the past. Your past mistakes have no bearing on your success today, unless you allow them to affect you. However, it can benefit you to reflect on the exhilaration of a previous victory or on a lesson you learned that could help you move on now. Reflect on it, let it go, and move on.

Each day is a fresh new beginning. Keep focused on your goals and dreams - which is where you're headed. You know that realistically, your life, security, freedom, and happiness do not depend on the outcome of just one meeting. So what if they all said "No"? What did you learn from the experience that can help you with your next meeting? As long as you're learning, you're growing. Keep persistently focusing and growing and then, watch what happens!

People often wonder how some folks are able to build a business faster than others. There are many possible reasons, but I feel that the one ingredient in all of them is the ability to stay focused on the goal. They do not dwell on the decisions of those who wont be joining them now. Instead, they keep finding and working with the ones who are interested in changing their lives. To the rest, they say "NEXT"!
